You have been working hard to keep up with workouts and you are doing an AWESOME job. However, rest and recovery is just as important as what you do inside the gym. When you allow your body time to restyour muscles can then repair themselves. Actually, most muscle repair and gains occur while your body is at rest.
What is happening in the gym?
When lifting you are creating microscopic tears to your muscle.
Why is this a good thing?
Creating tears and fatiguing your muscles allow room for muscle repair. Muscle repair in turn leads to muscular growth and muscular growth ultimately products more strength, power, ect. When you have more muscle mass you automatically burn more calories while your body is at rest. This is how we get stronger and faster. This is why we feel soreness after a good workout.
Post workout success is aided by two things: 1) Post-workout meal (ONE OF THE MOST IMPORTANT MEALS)AND 2) Proper stretching and rest
1) Foam Rolling (self-myofascial release)
Foam rolls are usually provided at every gym location. However if you are working out from home you can find a rather cheap foam roller online, at any sports store like Dick’s Sporting Goods, or sometimes even Wal-Mart .
Foam rolling, or self-myofasical release, is helpful to release tension from trigger points in your muscle cause from overload. Trigger points are like muscular “knots” that feel rather uncomfortable. Like a couple days after leg day I swore my hamstring was going to detach from my bone. Foam rolling can also realign muscle fibers and break down scar tissue that aids to feeling less pain in the long run after a heavy lift.
